Designed by Doug
Peterson, the Americas Cup winning designer, the KP44 is acknowledged
to be the near perfect cruising yacht. She was built by the Yu Ching Marine Co Ltd in Taiwan and shipped to the USA where she was rigged. She has a low profile centre cockpit, a long-fin keel with cutaways and skeg which gives a shorter turning radius as well as protecting the propeller. A displacement of 30,000 pounds (10,000 of which is steel ballast in the keel) gives the her an easy motion at
sea.
HISTORY
Cayuga has only had three
previous owners. Originally named Vivace she was chartered for 3
years, spending the summer on the NE coast of the USA and the winter
in the Caribbean. From 1982-2001 she was sailed by her owner in the
Great Lakes, spending the winter out of the water. In 1993/94 she had
a substantial ($36,000 ) external refit by Palmer Johnson Yachts of Sturgeon Bay
WI.
In 2001 she was sold
and moved to Lake Lanier near Atlanta, and stayed in fresh water
for another five years. Renamed Argentaire she had a further very
extensive refit. She had a new Cummins engine, transmission, propeller shaft ,and a Max Prop feathering propeller. Two Air Con units were installed, a 1200 BTU for the main cabin and a 7000 BTU in the aft cabin, great for those sticky nights in the marina . She had three new
aluminium fuel tanks and three new stainless steel fresh water tanks fitted.
New toilets and holding tanks were installed fore and aft, and a new
gas cooker with gas fittings, lines and solenoid. She had a full
osmosis treatment: her hull was stripped of the jellcoat and dried
out for 8 months, before a new epoxy barrier coat was applied. Her
topsides were painted with Awlgrip. The safety glass was replaced in her original bronze portholes, the other two portholes were
replaced with larger bronze ones in the main cabin. Five new stainless steel
portholes were added including two in transom . In
June 2004 a direct lightning strike destroyed all the electrics and
electronics, after which all the cabling, wiring and equipment was
replaced, including the refrigerator and hot water heater. We have
receipts for all the work carried out on both major refits.
In 2006 she was sold
again and renamed Cayuga. Her new owners equipped her for long
distance cruising with a water-maker, solar panel, wind generator, LED lights and new standing rigging.
For the next three years she returned to salt-water, cruising the US
East coast, Bahamas and Caribbean.
We bought her in 2010
and sailed her across the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, where she
has cruised ever since, spending three months of the year in the
water and the rest on the hard. For the crossing she was thoroughly
checked over, including crack-testing all the chain plates.
Additional equipment included a life-raft, EPIRB, whisker pole, RIB
and outboard. Ever since then she has been lovingly maintained.
Improvements include a gas conversion and a transformer. A new forward holding tank wa needed for the non-tidal Med, and a stak pack on the boom.
Significant replacements include a new 40 gallon freshwater tank,
wind instruments, engine exhaust hose, bimini, dodger and solar
panel controller.
See the photos for the
lay-out below deck. Forward there is a traditional V-berth, large
enough to be comfortable for two people, with a hanging locker and a
separate door to the head. The Windscoop makes it cool in even the hottest weather. The main cabin has the dining table to
port and a settee to starboard, which pulls out to make a good
passage berth with a lee cloth. Going aft there is a U-shaped galley to port, with
double-drainer sink amidships, and a nav station to starboard.
Behind the companion way there is a passage alongside
the engine, with the electrical cupboard and battery banks opposite
the engine, along with enough storage for spare canvas, awnings etc.
The aft master-cabin has a large berth, with portholes in the transom
giving plenty of light and ventilation, a hanging locker and a
private heads. There is plenty of storage space throughout, and good
climate control for hot weather: either by 5 large dorades, 3
hatches, 2 companionways and 19 opening portholes or by reverse-cycle
AC.
